Superstition Book

Tokko, the wee publisher I help run, have a new publication out!

 

The title is a compilation of personal superstitions collected from friends and strangers. Some are personalised derivatives of common superstitions, others are entirely new inventions. Some date back to childhood experiences, others are from more recent times. Some of them are simple, others highly complex. But they are all based on the common ground of supremely personal attempts of the construction of meaning.

Len Lye

Very excited to be introduced to the work of highly unique and pioneering experimental film maker Len Lye.  His early voyages into the world of colour which must have astonished his audiences in the 1930's

The vivacity and abstract, psychedelic nature of these films make them look like they're straight from the 1960's - when in fact they were thirty years ahead of the time.

Len used a variety of playful techniques and materials to create his dazzling colours - dying, stencilling and using felt tips on film as well as combs and surgical instruments to create texture.

Amazingly the following 1930's films were commissioned by the Post Office - some far out methods of promoting savings banks

Lye was also an important kinetic sculptor and subscribed to the belief that motion could be part of the 'language of art,' creating moving image until the end of his life in 1980.

Belly Kids Poster

Recently came in contact with the friendly folk at Belly Kids who create small publications and put on adventurous nights around London with music and zines.

They asked me to illustrate aposter for their recent event at the new East London bookshop and gallery space Beach London. This guy came out to play as a result - a few posters might be available soon through TOKKO too.

Miriam O'Connor

Very happy to recently come across the work of Dublin based photographer Miriam O'Connor.

She seems to cultivate some mesmerising images out of mundane everyday scenes.

Beni Bischof

 
Here's a Swiss artist I've discovered recently called Beni Bischof who makes, among other things, these fabulous gloopy multi coloured sculptures that I think are crazily exciting.

They kind of give me an urge to stick my face right in them for a munch.  Which I think can only be a good thing
